When we first started talking about inviting people to become SunGods Founders, I was conscious the idea could easily be interpreted as another crowdfunding campaign, where a brand develops a product, asks people to contribute towards manufacturing it and offers an early price or limited-edition reward in return, and while there is certainly a commercial reality behind bringing our first collection into production, I wanted the relationship between SunGods and our Founders to represent something considerably more meaningful than helping us reach a financial target.
When you support the SunGods MMXXVI Founder Run, you aren't simply helping us manufacture 400 bath sheets and 400 bed sets, although that is an important part of what we are doing; you are helping us take the first practical steps towards building a circular home and lifestyle system, one where the materials we choose, the products we design, the people who use them and what happens when those products are no longer needed are considered as parts of the same journey.
That is a much bigger ambition than launching a collection of beautiful homewares, and it is also why I think it is important to explain what Founder participation actually makes possible, what we have already invested in building, what we are still working towards and why the first people who choose to join us matter so much to what happens next.
There is a perception that once a product has been designed and photographed, the difficult work is largely complete, when in reality moving from development samples into manufacturing is an entirely different challenge, particularly when you are working with material combinations and construction details that haven't simply been selected from an existing supplier catalogue.
Our Founder Collection brings together Good Earth Cotton™, SeaCell™ Lyocell and TENCEL™ Lyocell across the bath sheets and bedding, with waffle construction for the bath sheets, reversible percale and sateen elements for the bed linen and a fitted-sheet retention system developed around YULASTIC, a plant-derived elastic alternative to conventional synthetic elastic.
Each of those decisions has required research, supplier relationships, technical development, sampling and manufacturing coordination, and each becomes part of the commercial reality of producing the first collection, because it is one thing to create a beautiful sample and quite another to manufacture hundreds of products consistently.
The first production run gives us the opportunity to move those decisions into finished products, establish repeatable manufacturing processes and begin understanding how the system performs beyond the development environment.
But manufacturing is only one part of the story.
The first SunGods collection consists of 400 Founder Bath Sheets, 100 for each of our four Gods, and 400 Founder Bed Sets across Queen and King sizes, quantities chosen to give us a meaningful first production run without immediately committing to the scale and inventory complexity associated with a much larger launch.
We aren't trying to fill warehouses with speculative stock or create an enormous range of variations before we understand what people genuinely value, because one of the lessons building SunGods has reinforced is that scaling something before you have properly learned from it can create considerably more complexity than progress.
The Founder Run allows us to begin with defined quantities, understand which products and designs people connect with, establish the practical requirements of fulfilling orders and learn how our bath sheets and bedding perform once they become part of everyday life.
It also allows us to remain close to our first customers, which matters because we are not simply testing whether somebody likes the idea of a more considered home product; we are learning whether the decisions we have made about materials, construction, usability and design translate into an experience people genuinely value.
That is a very different question from how many products we can sell.
One of the more difficult realities of starting a product business is manufacturing decisions often need to be made long before you know how many people will actually buy what you are producing, which creates a familiar commercial problem: order too little and you risk being unable to meet demand, order too much and you tie up capital and resources in products that may sit in storage for considerably longer than anticipated.
For SunGods, that question has an additional dimension because we are trying to build a business around more conscious consumption, and it would make very little sense to begin by manufacturing far more than we reasonably expect people to need simply because larger volumes might improve the economics of production.
The Founder Run gives us an opportunity to connect purchasing decisions more closely with real demand, using early participation to inform production planning and future inventory decisions rather than treating speculative volume as the starting point.
That doesn't eliminate manufacturing risk or guarantee that every product will sell, but it creates a more considered way to approach the first stage of growth, particularly while we are still learning which parts of the collection resonate most strongly with the people we are trying to reach.
For me, that is part of responsible business design as much as responsible product design.
We have spent months developing materials, reviewing samples, questioning specifications and working through manufacturing decisions, but there are some things we simply cannot learn properly until the products are being used by people who haven't been involved in designing them.
How does the waffle bath sheet feel after repeated laundering, how do people use it between the bathroom, beach and pool, how does the reversible bedding fit into different sleeping preferences and does our fitted-sheet retention system make the experience of making a bed easier in practice?
These are questions that become considerably more meaningful when they are answered through real use rather than assumptions.
That is why Founder feedback matters.
We want to understand what people love, what they find frustrating, which details they notice and which improvements would genuinely make the next production run better, because thoughtful design shouldn't end when a product leaves the factory.
The first collection gives us the opportunity to begin that learning process, and while we won't necessarily act on every individual suggestion, the experiences of our Founders will help inform how the products and systems evolve.
Perhaps the most important part of the Founder Run is something that doesn't appear on the product specification at all, because while the bath sheets and bedding are the physical expression of SunGods, The Circle is the community through which we want the philosophy of conscious living to become something people actively participate in together.
We want to bring together people who are curious about the things they consume, who question the habits they have developed and who believe that the collective effect of more conscious everyday choices can contribute to healthier, more regenerative natural systems, recognising that meaningful change rarely comes from one extraordinary decision but from the choices we make repeatedly and the behaviours we encourage within our communities.
That is why The Circle isn't simply a loyalty program designed to encourage another purchase, and why becoming a Founder means more than receiving one of our first products; it is an invitation to share what we learn, explore different ways of living, care for what we own, keep resources in circulation and participate in building something that extends beyond SunGods itself.
I genuinely believe that if we can create a community where conscious living becomes something we practise collectively rather than another impossible standard we try to achieve individually, the value of that community has the potential to become far greater than the products that brought us together in the first place.
The products are where we begin. The Circle is how we move forward.
There is another important reason we are approaching the Founder Run this way, because designing products with a beginning, a life and a way home requires more than choosing considered materials and creating a return program somewhere down the track.
It requires us to understand how products move through their useful lives, how people care for them, what happens when ownership changes and which recovery pathways might eventually allow the materials to continue creating value beyond their original purpose.
Our Founder Collection is intended to begin establishing that relationship through product identification, personalised digital Founder certificates and material provenance information, with FibreTrace verification forming part of our initial approach to supporting fibre-origin claims.
Over time, our ambition is to connect those records to the products' future journeys, so when a bath sheet or set of bed linen reaches the end of its first useful life, we can explore opportunities for reuse, recovery and eventually incorporating suitable materials into future SunGods products.
We are not claiming that this entire system is already operational or that every returned fibre can automatically be transformed into something new, because those outcomes depend on recovery technologies, material condition, logistics and partnerships that still need to be developed and tested.
The Founder Run gives us the first real products, relationships and experiences around which that system can begin taking shape.
There is a practical commercial reality behind everything we are building, because developing products, securing materials, manufacturing the first collection, establishing fulfilment systems and continuing to invest in circular design all require capital, and without a commercially viable business none of those ambitions can progress beyond the development stage.
When you support the Founder Run, your purchase helps establish the commercial foundation for our first collection, supports the transition into production and gives us the opportunity to begin learning from real customers, while future revenue and investment will be needed to develop the wider recovery and traceability systems we are working towards.
I think it is important to be clear about that distinction, because purchasing a SunGods product isn't a donation to an environmental project and we shouldn't pretend that every dollar automatically creates a measurable regenerative outcome.
You are buying a bath sheet or bedding that we have spent considerable time developing, and in choosing to become one of our first customers you are also helping us test whether a different approach to product design, manufacturing, ownership and eventual recovery can become a commercially viable system.
That is what Founder participation means in practical terms.
When I think about what success would look like for our Founder Run, of course I want the products to sell, because manufacturing, fulfilment and future development depend on building a business that can support itself, but I also want to understand what happens after those first purchases.
Do people love living with the products?
Do the design details make everyday routines easier?
Do our Founders feel connected to the materials and stories behind what they own?
Does The Circle become a community where people genuinely participate in conscious living?
Can we begin developing the systems that will eventually allow those products and materials to continue beyond their first useful lives?
Those questions matter because the Founder Run isn't the finish line for SunGods.
It is the point where years of research, development and questioning begin meeting the realities of manufacturing, ownership, community and everyday use, giving us the opportunity to learn what works and build the next chapter from something more meaningful than assumptions.
So when we invite you to become a SunGods Founder, we aren't asking you to support another collection simply because it is new, and we aren't suggesting that buying a bath sheet or bedding will somehow regenerate the planet.
We are inviting you to become part of the beginning of a different system, one that recognises products should be useful and beautiful, materials should be valued, communities have the potential to change behaviour and the responsibility for what we create shouldn't end when something is sold.
The first 800 products are where we begin. What we build together is what matters next.
Designed with a beginning, a life and a way home.
